Senior Frontend Engineer
Company: Skydio
Salary: Not provided
Location: , United States
About the job
Skydio is the leading US drone company and the world leader in autonomous flight, the key technology for the future of drones and aerial transportation. The Skydio team combines deep expertise in artificial intelligence, best-in-class hardware and software product development, and operational excellence to empower a broader, more diverse audience of drone users - from first responders to insurance claims adjusters, utilities, and more!
About The Role
By combining best-in-class autonomy and cloud-connected real-time visibility, our drones can get to the scene ahead of first responders. Drones act as their eyes and ears, giving them real-time situational awareness for better tactical decisions. Drones can be piloted by a remote operator from our Cloud platform, DFR Command, allowing those on scene to focus on what’s happening in front of them.
As a full stack or frontend engineer on this team, you will be responsible for building out critical cloud products and features to add to and improve our software in this area. You will be working across multiple parts of the Skydio stack and delivering new capabilities continuously to our growing commercial customer base in the drones as first responders (DFR) space.
How You’ll Make An Impact
- Build and expand our web applications: Remote Flight Deck for drone pilots in operations centers, DFR Command for higher-ups with a strategic view, ReadyLink for people with boots on the ground to receive drone video and intelligence.
- Imagine and build best in class UIs and UX, leveraging advanced web technologies, 3D and video, and taking inspiration from video games, aerospace cockpits, video conferencing apps, AI tools and other specialized professional apps
- Collaborate across functions (product managers, designers, engineers, testers) to design and deliver customer-facing product features that enable drones as first responders (DFR) workflows, and more generally, our vision for drones as infrastructure
- Leverage your experience and best practices to not only uphold but improve Skydio’s engineering standards for secure, efficient, observable, scalable software. From code review to post-mortems, you’ll be expected to help the team grow.
- Ensure Skydio’s platform is available 24/7 by joining in the rotating on-call schedule across all engineering teams. While reliability is critical, our platform is stable and incidents are rare - Crime never sleeps, but thankfully, you still can.
What Would Make You a Good Fit
- You have fun building great software commercially, from backend to frontend, from idea to realized user value (5+ years of experience preferred)
- You are customer-focused and love shipping products that quickly solve customer problems. You are interested in talking to our users and visiting them.
- You have demonstrated the ability to take a concept and systematically drive it through the software lifecycle: architecture, development, testing, deployment and monitoring.
- You have experience building and delivering scalable and secure cloud based systems with a high proficiency in modern cloud technologies within a complex codebase.
- Direct experience with our frontend stack (TypeScript, React.js, Next.js, GraphQL)
- Direct experience with our backend stack (Python, PostgreSQL, Temporal)
- Bonus for direct experience with 3D graphics and video game tolling (WebGL, WebGPU, Unreal Engine, Three.js)
- Bonus for experience with geospatial tools (Mapbox, Cesium, ESRI suite, PostGIS, QGIS)
- Bonus for experience with real time and streaming tooling (Websockets, WebRTC, Livekit, WebCodecs)
- Bonus for direct experience with autonomy and robotics (Drone software, robotics software, ROS)
