Front-end developer

The Company

We seek an experienced front-end developer interested in biological data to join the Velankar team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) to work on web services related to the Protein Data Bank in Europe (https://pdbe.org).

This post is an exciting opportunity to work as part of EMBL-EBI to improve existing and develop new web services that make macromolecular structures freely and openly available to the scientific community. It is the perfect role for someone creative, curious, ambitious and likes tackling challenging user experience problems.

The Velankar team manages the PDBe, PDBe-KB and AlphaFold DB data resources. You will join a group of international and interdisciplinary professionals, including data curators, bioinformaticians, scientific software developers, and IT specialists.

The successful candidate will be the primary developer of the front-end application of PDBe and PDBe-KB and will drive data visualisation efforts by improving and developing reusable web components.

Role Summary

You will be in a technical role. In this role, you will:

• Develop and maintain user-facing web pages in the Angular framework to display macromolecular structures and annotations ensure the codebase meets high-quality standards regarding efficiency, tests and documentation.
• You will also be involved in developing innovative data visualisations in JavaScript/TypeScript using industry-standard libraries, such as D3.js and WebGL. These visualisations will display 2D information and interact with our 3D molecular graphics viewer, Mol

Requirements

• BSc/MSc in software development or related fields
• Expert-level knowledge of JavaScript/TypeScript
• In-depth understanding of the Angular framework
• In-depth understanding of the D3.js library
• Track record of delivering public-facing web applications
• Familiarity and experience in testing and documenting web applications
• Proven ability to develop web applications with MVC architecture
